Chapter 246 Escape
Chapter 246 Escape
Bai Zhi sensed a strong whiff of being used and discarded after being served, and she frowned, saying without any mercy, "You're such a bastard."
Gu Yan continued, "If it were you, and everyone around you since childhood had been sycophantic and opportunistic, all gentle in public but constantly plotting against you and harming you behind your back, and then suddenly a servant comes along who is devoted to you and doesn't care about the consequences, wouldn't you think he has ulterior motives?"
Bai Zhi was momentarily stunned: "Huh?"
“Once such a thought takes hold, it cannot be eliminated unless he dies for you. Only then will you be at ease, with his entire life laid bare before you.”
After a long pause, Bai Zhi finally managed to choke out, "Are you out of your mind? You doubt people just because they're nice to you? How did Mingxin end up with someone like you?"
Gu Yan answered irrelevantly: "Back then, it didn't matter whether it was you or anyone else around Chu Yunchuan. Did you really see his heart clearly?"
Bai Zhi squinted her eyes and remained silent for a long time. Seeing this, Gu Yan shook his head with a half-smile and lazily lay down against the railing.
"Are you done talking?" Bai Zhi moved to the railing, banged hard on the railing next to his head, and raised her eyebrows. "Even if that's true, so what? I was the one next to him back then. This matter is settled and can't be changed."
Gu Yan was taken aback: "...You're quite open-minded." He sat up and looked straight at Bai Zhi. "I've heard that Chu Yunchuan and Wei Fuguang are very close friends."
“Not to mention that they have absolutely no personal feelings for each other, even if Chu Yunchuan really decides to let go one day in the future, I’ve still gained something from these days.” Bai Zhi’s gaze was open and honest. “I did hesitate before, but then I thought about it and realized that life is only about 30,000 days. Why be hesitant and restrained? Enjoy what you can first, and live each day to the fullest.”
Gu Yan's lips twitched twice, then he suddenly leaned closer: "When you look at my face, does it remind you of Chu Yunchuan?"
"Bullshit." Bai Zhi was pushed back by the smell. "My Chu Yunchuan is a hundred thousand times more handsome than you."
The conversation abruptly ended, and Gu Yan turned around and shuffled back to where he had originally been.
In the prison, they were only given two meals a day. Bai Zhi and Gu Yan were treated the same way. The staple food was wheat-colored, which was similar to steamed buns, but it was not filling at all.
A few days later, Bai Zhi visibly lost weight.
The prison was dark and gloomy, with only a few candles for the two of them to light. They could only count the days by the number of times food was delivered. To conserve her strength, Bai Zhi spent most of her time meditating and regulating her breathing. Gu Yan hadn't spoken a word to Bai Zhi since their unpleasant encounter that day, and Bai Zhi was happy to have some peace and quiet.
The prison bars were very sturdy, and the guards had no weaknesses. It would be difficult for her to escape on her own. She could only hope that her two inside men would remember her when they ran away.
Finally, when dinner was delivered one evening, Bai Zhi found a note under the steamed bun: "Tonight at midnight."
coming.
Bai Zhi chewed the note along with the steamed bun and swallowed it, then knocked on the railing in the middle: "Hey, Gu Yan."
Gu Yan glanced at her but ignored her. Bai Zhi called out again, but Gu Yan still ignored her.
"..." Bai Zhi was both amused and exasperated. "Isn't it just that you're not as good-looking as Chu Yunchuan? Do you have to be so serious? There aren't many people in the entire Great Yan who are better looking than him."
After a long silence, Gu Yan finally spoke in a muffled voice: "What do you want to say?"
"Go to sleep."
"what?"
"Take a nap and conserve your energy," Bai Zhi said in a low voice. "There's good news coming. Trust me, get some sleep first."
Gu Yan scoffed, "Nonsense. What good things could a prisoner possibly have?"
Bai Zhi looked at him for a while, then beckoned him: "Come here, I'll tell you a secret."
Gu Yan actually came closer, and Bai Zhi quickly pointed a finger at his pressure point to put him to sleep—with a thud, Gu Yan slid down the railing, limp and weak.
"Go to sleep, go to sleep," Bai Zhi whispered. "Don't blame me for leaving you behind when you're too tired to run away."
There were no windows in the prison, so she couldn't see the moon or know the time of day. Bai Zhi could only close her eyes and pretend to sleep to conserve her energy, but dared not actually sleep.
Suddenly, a distant, muffled explosion rang out, and Bai Zhi immediately opened her eyes. In an instant, the outer door of the cell was kicked open, and a strange man from the Great Yan Dynasty barged in.
"You..." Bai Zhi sized up the man, "You're the one who was here tonight at midnight?"
The man pulled his arm back and slammed his palm down hard on the copper lock of the prison door, shattering it with his internal force: "It's me! Fellow disciple! Come out now!"
It was actually an inside man! Bai Zhi quickly got up and rushed out of the cell: "I put Gu Yan to sleep."
He replicated Gu Yan's lock in the same way, then used a finger to wake Gu Yan. He slowly awoke, groggily saying, "You are...?"
"Stop talking nonsense and get going!"
The inside man and Bai Zhi flanked Gu Yan and led him out. On the way out of the prison, Bai Zhi saw the long row of cages where the Great Yan soldiers had been imprisoned, but the place was now deserted.
“Wushameng has exchanged hostages with us. Now the only one who is not safe is you. He plans to use you to threaten His Highness in exchange for the four cities of Ningzhou,” the informant explained.
"Hurry up, if we lose the city, we'll have to fight our way back." Bai Zhi looked around and asked curiously, "Why aren't there any jailers here? Did you do this?"
"They all went to put out the fire. The prison is now only holding the two of you. Ge Zhen was too confident and didn't leave anyone behind."
"What did you burn?"
"The houses of Wusameng and Gezhen, as well as several other houses in that row, are currently being fought off."
Stepping out of the last cell door, Bai Zhi took a deep breath of fresh air, a feeling she hadn't had in a long time, and then looked towards Ge Zhen's room. A raging fire blazed amidst billowing smoke, and she could hear the chaos that was brewing over there.
"Well done!" Bai Zhi exclaimed enthusiastically.
"Come with me."
The young man inside led them, turning left and right, along a dimly lit path.
After running for the time it takes to burn an incense stick, they knew they had to go to the plaza ahead. The three of them were extremely careful, slowing their breathing as they moved along the cover of the mountainside.
"Who goes there!"
The three stopped abruptly. The young man inside made a shushing gesture and mouthed "It wasn't us." Bai Zhi subconsciously looked left and right and saw three large, conspicuous dark figures on the mountainside to her left.
The torch on the right is burning quietly.
Bai Zhi pointed at the dark figure, widened her eyes, and whispered, "Run!"
The young man inside cursed under his breath, and without saying a word, he hoisted Gu Yan onto his shoulder and ran off using his light-footed skills, with Bai Zhi close behind.
The shouts and cries of killing behind them grew louder and louder. Bai Zhi didn't have time to look back, but she estimated that there were about a hundred or so people chasing them.
The young center shouted, "This won't do! None of us can escape!"
Bai Zhi shouted, "Hold on! Hold on until we reach a place in the mountains where there are no more torches!"
"No!" A voice transmission went straight into Bai Zhi's ears, "Xin Suhe has no antidote. Another person who infiltrated wants to take away the old medicine shaman of Salam. I'll distract the barbarians, and you run into the mountains."
