Chapter 286 We're Just Friends
Chapter 286 We're Just Friends
When Xia Rou pushed open the dormitory door, Lin Yue was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the meal card in her hand, looking at it over and over.
She rubbed her thumb on the card and couldn't help but giggle.
The door slammed against the wall with a loud "bang".
Lin Yue's hand trembled, and she almost dropped her meal card.
She quickly stuffed her meal card under her pillow and looked up.
Xia Rou stood at the door, hands on her hips, her expression as if she had caught a criminal red-handed.
She walked in, took off her hat and threw it on the table, pulled up a chair, sat down in front of Lin Yue, and crossed her arms.
"Lin Yue," Xia Rou said in a low, interrogative tone, "you'd better confess honestly."
Lin Xiaolu peeked out from the upper bunk, and Chen Simin walked in from the balcony, holding a T-shirt that was half-wrung out.
The two men exchanged a glance, looking at Xia Rou's posture.
"What exactly is your relationship with Song Huan?"
Xia Rou held up one finger. "First, when you fainted due to low blood sugar, Song Huan helped you up, and you clung to his arm and wouldn't let go."
Lin Yue opened her mouth.
Xia Rou didn't give her a chance to speak, and raised another finger, "Secondly, I saw it clearly on the playground when he took you to the school clinic. You were clinging to him the whole way."
He raised another one: "Third, when you two were eating in the cafeteria, he was putting food on your plate, and you were eating with great enthusiasm. I stood by the window for ages, and you didn't even glance at me."
Lin Xiaolu opened her mouth.
Chen Simin sat next to Xia Rou. "Yueyue, you're the most beautiful girl in our dorm. If you're going to date, you should find someone who's good enough for you, at least someone like Shen Yan—handsome, tall, and rich. Why did you fall for Song Huan?"
Lin Xiaolu draped her T-shirt over the back of the chair and sat down. "Well, Song Huan, on her own, is alright. She's tall, quite strong, and has delicate features, with a sunny smile. But standing next to Shen Yan, well... you know."
Chen Simin nodded. "Yes, Shen Yan is the type that makes girls turn their heads when he's walking down the street. Song Huan is the type that girls glance at when they're walking down the street and then keep walking."
Xia Rou concluded, "So, why did you fall for Song Huan?"
Looking at the three interrogating faces in front of her, Lin Yue moved her pillow back and sat up straight.
Her chin was slightly raised, her eyes bright, showing no sign of being interrogated. "Because he's good."
Xia Rou paused for a moment, "What's so good about it?"
Lin Yue thought for a moment, then counted on her fingers, "He's tall, strong, has a nice smile, is caring, and is a good fighter."
Xia Rou frowned. "Fight?"
Lin Yue nodded, her eyes shining. "Yes. In junior high, some boys bullied me, and he fought them off for me. He fought off several of them all by himself. Another time, he took a beating on his back for me, and it left a big bruise."
The dormitory was quiet for a moment.
Xia Rou opened her mouth, as if to say something, but then swallowed it back.
Lin Yue continued, her tone shifting from excitement to something softer, "Later I transferred schools. I didn't tell him when I left because I didn't know how to say it. I stayed at the new school for three years, and I wanted to come back every day, but I couldn't. My mom wouldn't let me come back."
She lowered her head and drew circles on the blanket with her finger. "Later, when it came time to fill out college applications, I didn't know which school he would apply to, so I asked my junior high school homeroom teacher to find out. The homeroom teacher said that he applied to Nanjiang University, so I wrote Nanjiang University as my first choice."
She looked up at the three people in front of her, her tone as calm as if she were talking about something trivial, "I came to Nanjing University for him."
Xia Rou was stunned, Lin Xiaolu was stunned, and Chen Simin was also stunned.
Several seconds passed before Xia Rou spoke, her voice much softer, "The boy you mentioned before, is he Song Huan?"
Lin Yue nodded readily, "That's right!"
The three girls looked at each other in bewilderment.
Lin Xiaolu was the first to react, "But you haven't seen each other for six years. Anything can happen in six years."
She paused, then softened her voice, "What if he has a girlfriend?"
Lin Yue's eyelashes trembled slightly.
The smile was still on his face, but he stopped moving.
She looked down at the meal card in her hand.
After a few seconds, she raised her head, chin slightly up, eyes bright, and said, word by word, "I'm not afraid."
Three girls were looking at her.
"Goals scored by goalkeepers are even more exciting."
The three of them stared at her in disbelief.
Lin Yue's face showed only determination.
[Having a girlfriend is fine, I've waited six years, a little longer won't make a difference.]
……
During a break from military training on the second day, Lin Yue sat under the shade of a tree, holding a water bottle, her eyes scanning the playground.
When the camera scanned Song Huan, it paused for a moment, then moved away.
She was looking to see if there were any other girls next to Song Huan.
Xiao Yunqing is not in this school.
She has already confirmed this.
During dinner yesterday, she subtly inquired about it, and Song Huan said that Xiao Yunqing was at Donghai University.
Tunghai University is next door, not here.
But that doesn't mean there are no others.
There are plenty of pretty girls in college.
For example, right now.
A girl was standing in front of Song Huan, holding a folder in her hand. She opened it, pointed to a certain line, and was saying something.
The girl was wearing a camouflage outfit with a tightly cinched belt, which made her waist look very slim.
Her profile was turned towards Lin Yue, revealing a high nose bridge and a pointed chin.
She leaned slightly forward as she spoke, very close to Song Huan.
Lin Yue put down her water glass and stood up.
He brushed the grass clippings off his pants and walked over there.
I walked a few steps away from them, stopped, squatted down by the flower bed, and pretended to tie my shoelaces.
"You'll be in charge of compiling a list of your class's performances for the freshman welcome party."
The girl's voice was crisp and clear. "Each class should send at least one person. The format is not limited; singing, dancing, or a skit are all acceptable."
Song Huan nodded. "When is the registration deadline?"
"Before Friday."
The girl closed the folder and handed it to him, saying, "The application forms are inside. Just collect them and hand them in to the student union office."
Song Huan took the folder and said, "Okay."
The girl smiled, waved, and turned to leave.
Song Huan turned around and almost bumped into someone.
Lin Yue stood behind him, tilting her head and squinting her eyes, like a cat that had discovered some clue.
Song Huan took half a step back. "What are you doing?"
Lin Yue did not answer.
She took a step forward, standing very close to him, tilting her head back and looking at his face.
How to describe that look in his eyes?
Like a police officer interrogating a criminal.
"What's your relationship with that woman?"
Song Huan was taken aback. "Which one?"
"That one just now, she had a really slim waist."
Lin Yue pouted slightly, her chin held high, looking down at him with an air of superiority.
Song Huan thought for a moment, "It's from the Student Union's Arts and Culture Department, they came to inform us about the freshmen party."
Lin Yue frowned slightly. "What did she say to you?"
"Let me compile a list of the programs performed in the class."
"Then why was she standing so close?"
Song Huan looked at her.
Her face was slightly flushed, whether from the sun or something else, I couldn't tell.
His eyes were wide open, his lips were pursed, and he had an expression that said, "You have to give me an explanation."
"We're just friends," Song Huan said helplessly.
Lin Yue was taken aback for a moment, then immediately said, "Even if we're friends, it's not okay. How can you talk so close together..."
Song Huan was speechless for a moment, then coughed and said, "I was talking about 'us,' we're just friends!"
Then Lin Yue realized what was happening.
He said "we," not "me and that girl," but "you and me!"
Her mouth opened slightly, then closed again.
The superior air he had just exuded was completely gone; he was like a punctured balloon, his shoulders slumping down.
"oh."
His voice was muffled, carrying a hint of grievance.
She looked down at the tips of her shoes.
The shoelaces were tied perfectly; in fact, they didn't need to be tied at all.
He said we were just friends, just friends.
[That's true, we just got back together. He's nice to me because he's the class monitor, it's only right that he takes care of me, he said that himself...]
Seeing her dejected appearance, Song Huan opened her mouth, about to say something.
Lin Yue suddenly raised her head, her expression changing from dejection to something indescribable.
His eyes were bright, the corners of his mouth were upturned, and his eyebrows were raised, like a balloon that had been re-inflated.
"Friends are fine too!"
Song Huan was stunned.
"Friends can eat together, friends can take walks together, friends can also..."
She tilted her head and thought for a moment, "Anyway, friends can do a lot of things!"
She got more and more excited as she talked, counting on her fingers, "Friends can go to the library together, friends can go grocery shopping together, friends can go to the movies together, friends can also..."
Song Huan interrupted her, "What exactly are you trying to say?"
Lin Yue lowered her hands, put them behind her back, tilted her head to look at him, her eyes curving into crescents, "I want to say, since we're friends, you should call me if you need anything in the future."
Song Huan looked at her.
Her face was rosy from the sun, and her eyes were bright, reflecting his image.
"All right."
Lin Yue smiled, revealing two rows of white teeth.
She turned around and skipped away, her ponytail swaying behind her, her steps as light as a kitten that had stolen a fish.
After walking a few steps, she turned back to look at him again and waved to him.
"Let's go, class monitor!"
