Chapter 9 The Ceremony is Complete——
Chapter 9 The Ceremony is Complete——
Luo Feng was lifted up from in front of the dressing table by two old women.
The wedding dress on his body felt as heavy as a thousand pounds, making him unable to move at all. He could only be pushed step by step towards the door by two nannies like a puppet.
Outside the house, countless white, hollow, round pieces of paper began to float down. Through the narrow view revealed by the red veil, Luo Feng saw them fluttering and swirling in the air like snowflakes, before gently falling and piling up on the road, forming a thick, soft layer of white.
Luo Feng didn't know what those white round pieces of paper were for, but he sensed an ominous aura. However, he couldn't refuse; the person supporting him used an unyielding force to push him over the threshold of the door.
The moment he stepped out, the joyous and ear-piercing celebratory music reached its peak. Amidst the crackling and popping of firecrackers, Luo Feng was escorted to the wedding hall.
"The bride has arrived!"
"The bride has arrived!"
Luo Feng heard many people whispering and the sounds of children running around happily. But all he could see were pairs of feet, big and small, wearing different shoes, and patches of bright red.
"The bride has arrived!"
The matchmaker shouted in a shrill voice, "Bring the fire basin—"
A copper basin appeared ahead of the road. The basin was thick and had been blackened by the flames in varying shades; many white paper money bills that had drifted in from outside the door had been licked clean by the eerie green flames burning in the basin.
Before Luo Feng could figure out what the copper basin blocking his way was for, he felt the force on his arm increase—he was lifted up and "stepped" over the copper basin.
"The bride crosses the evil path, connecting yin and yang—"
Luo Feng wasn't sure if it was just his imagination, but he felt that the temperature around him suddenly dropped after he stepped over the copper basin.
"The auspicious time has arrived—"
"Wedding Ceremony—"
Luo Feng was dragged forward. The new room he entered was very large, with people standing on both sides. In the very center of the room, there was a huge rectangular box that could easily fit a person inside.
The huge box was made of some unknown material. Although it appeared to be made of wood, it was so black that it seemed to have an eerie green sheen. The sides, front, back, left, and right were covered with red "囍" characters, making it both festive and glaring.
"One bow—"
The matchmaker drawled, "Heaven and earth bear witness to our joyous union!"
Before Luo Feng could react, he was forced to stand next to the black box and a nanny forcefully pressed his head down. The nanny's strength was astonishing, and Luo Feng was forced to bend over towards the door.
"Second bow—"
Luo Feng was roughly pulled up and violently turned around.
"May our ancestors rest in peace, and may our incense burn forever!"
His head was rudely pressed down again, and in the instant the red veil flew off, Luo Feng glimpsed the direction in which he was bending over, and it seemed that two people were sitting on a high armchair.
"Husband and wife—" the matchmaker's voice suddenly rose, becoming incredibly shrill and piercing, "Bowing to each other!"
Luo Feng was turned around once again.
This time, he was facing that black square box.
The black box had no lid, which allowed Luo Feng to finally see the entire black box and what was inside.
His pupils suddenly contracted.
A person... is lying inside.
He was tall and wore a brand-new red shirt, clearly the same style as the one he was currently wearing, with a stiffly starched collar that tightly constricted his pale, lifeless neck.
Unfortunately, the red veil obscured Luo Feng's view, preventing him from seeing the man's face. He could only see the man's hands, clasped together on his abdomen and protruding from the wide sleeves of his wedding robe, with long, pointed nails.
Clearly, those were the hands of a dead person.
It was grayish-white, as if covered with a fine layer of wax.
It was a pair of dead hands that had been dead for many days.
"Yin and Yang are in harmony, inseparable in life and death!"
The red wedding candles suddenly burst open, and the matchmaker raised her voice once more. Luo Feng was forced to bend over towards the huge coffin draped in red and colorful decorations, his neck pressed down.
"Thump!" His forehead was forced to slam hard against the coffin, the pain making Luo Feng see stars. The candlelight flickered violently, stretching and shortening the shadows of the coffin and Luo Feng.
Just as he was feeling dizzy and disoriented, Luo Feng suddenly felt a sharp pain in his finger. The matchmaker, who had been standing far away and dressed in a purplish-red dress, had somehow appeared beside him and used a dagger tied with red silk to cut open his finger.
She was gripping Luo Feng's bleeding finger tightly, forcibly pressing it against an old, yellowed piece of paper. Luo Feng only caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a similar bloody fingerprint on the paper before his finger was pressed hard against that fingerprint.
The moment his fingertips touched the yellow paper, the joyful music in his ears suddenly became distant. Luo Feng felt a chill flow into his body through his fingertips, making his already stiff body even more immobile.
"Send the bride to the bridal chamber!" The matchmaker's voice was filled with joy.
Luo Feng felt himself being lifted up again, but this time, his direction of movement was—towards the black coffin.
"!!!"
Even if you don't understand the specifics of these rituals, once you're pressed in front of the black coffin, facing the pale, swollen face of the man inside so close to your own, even the dumbest person will know what these people are trying to do.
A primal shudder swept through his body, clearing his mind of all thoughts in that instant, leaving only one consciousness screaming incessantly:
They mustn't be pushed in!
They absolutely must not be pushed in!
Every cell in his body was screaming to escape, and Luo Feng began to struggle violently.
What he thought was intense was actually only the level of a kitten struggling. He struggled for a long time, panting heavily, and in the end, he only managed to shake off the red veil covering his head.
Luo Feng finally saw the entire room clearly.
He gasped.
Countless faded red silk ribbons were hanging everywhere in the room, covering the beams and walls with countless bright red "囍" characters, layer upon layer, almost covering every inch of space.
The two armchairs where he had been forced to bow were now empty, with only two memorial tablets with white characters on a black background.
Of course, that wasn't the most critical issue. The most critical issue was that he saw both sides of the room, outside the door... everywhere he looked was filled with "people"—
Those in the front row leaned slightly forward, as if trying to see more clearly; those in the back row craned their necks to look around; those in the corners whispered amongst themselves, their cheeks almost touching... Men and women, young and old, packed one after another, layer upon layer, making the room so crowded that it was impossible to move.
They might wear different clothes and shoes, but all of them share the same rough, paper-thin face—
There were no eyebrows, no nose, only two lifeless round eyes drawn with rough ink dots, two overly bright, round mounds of vermilion blush, and a mouth painted with scarlet paint, upturned in a uniform smile.
And no matter what position they maintained, the faces of these paper figures were all facing Luo Feng.
The scene was so terrifying that Luo Feng's heart skipped a beat.
and many more!
Luo Feng suddenly realized what was happening.
If these "people" are all fake, then what about the noises and sounds he heard through the veil?
Oh, and those two old women who've been controlling him from the very beginning...
Before Luo Feng could even turn his head to check, a tremendous force suddenly struck his back. The next second, he lost his balance and crashed heavily into the black coffin.
The black lid began to slowly close.
With a soft "click," he heard a high-pitched voice calling out from somewhere:
"The ceremony is complete!"
Then, his world was plunged into complete darkness.
