Chapter 339 - 337: Public Mediation Meeting! Let’s See Who’s in the Wrong!
"I’m telling you, this isn’t over! You’re just relying on your husband being an official! I’m going to the military compound’s administration office right now! To the Family Committee! I’m going to tell everyone how your Gu Family climbed up to high positions, turning your backs on relatives and pushing those asking for help to the brink!"
"I want the whole compound to see how cold-blooded and ruthless the glorious family of the Commander really is!"
She turned to open the door.
"Bang"
A loud noise.
The heavy wooden door closed in front of her, shaking the dust off the door frame.
At some point, Gu Yanshen had moved to the doorway, with one hand pressed against the door, his tall frame like an insurmountable wall, blocking out all the light from outside and all of Wang Guixiang’s retreat.
He didn’t say a word, just looked at her calmly.
No anger was visible on his face, only a deathly stillness.
Qin Jian Country got weak in the knees under his gaze, instinctively pulling Wang Guixiang back. "You... what do you want to do? Illegal detention?"
Wang Guixiang realized, and her tantrum grew stronger. She plopped down by the door, slapping the door panel with her hands and howling as if she were being slaughtered.
"There’s no justice! Murder!"
"The officials are bullying us poor relatives! Not giving us money and trying to lock us up and beat us to death! Help!"
Her wailing was terrible and penetrating, like a spike piercing through the evening calm of the military compound.
Lin Wan Yi did not try to stop her.
She simply went to the living room, picked up the untouched, sticky fruit candies on the table, walked to the door, crouched down, and gently placed the greasy paper bag next to Wang Guixiang’s hand.
"Aunt, crying takes energy, have a candy to soothe your throat."
Her voice was soft yet clear, overriding the cries.
The crying Wang Guixiang, her sobs stuck in her throat. She looked at the candy she had earlier despised, then at Lin Wan Yi’s calm face, feeling a fiery embarrassment, as if slapped with an invisible hand.
Outside the door, the first to peek out was the neighbor across the way.
Soon, footsteps approached, more and more people drawn by the unusual commotion.
"What’s going on?"
"Seems like from the Commander’s house..."
"Who’s crying? Sounds pitiful."
Speculation came muffled through the door.
Upon hearing voices outside, Wang Guixiang cried even more fiercely, weaving stories as she wailed: "My poor niece’s husband... married a city capitalist’s daughter and forgot about us, the rustic relatives... Came to borrow money for my son’s wedding, but they want to throw us out..."
Just then, a sharp voice joined in.
"Oh my, who is this if not a relative of the Old Qin Family?" Aunt Wang somehow squeezed her way in, peering through the Gu Family window with undisguised schadenfreude. "I said so, some people are born low, they can’t change their nature! Snobby, looking down on us working people! Now look, they’ve driven their relatives to sit crying on the ground!"
Her words were like a drop of oil in a hot pan.
The faces of the gathered families changed instantly. In these times, "background" and "origin" were the most sensitive topics.
"What? A capitalist’s daughter?"
"No wonder, always looked spoiled, not a homemaker."
"Tsk tsk, why would Mr. Gu marry such a woman..."
Filthy words poured in like a tide.
"Shut your damn mouth!"
A shout of anger, and Gu Lan burst from the crowd like a lit firecracker. Just back from outside, she shook with rage seeing the scene.
"Fatty Wang! You dare say another word, I’ll tear your mouth off!" She pointed at Aunt Wang’s nose, her eyes red, "Who are you to gossip about what’s going on in my brother’s house?"
"How am I lying? Ask everyone, didn’t your family drive your relatives to desperation?" Aunt Wang, emboldened by the crowd, didn’t cower at all.
"You..."
Gu Lan, infuriated, was about to charge in.
A warm yet firm hand held her arm back.
Lin Wan Yi had somehow opened the door and stood at the entrance.
She still wore an apron from cooking, her face betraying no anger, as serene as if nothing had happened.
"Sister-in-law!" Gu Lan cried, both anxious and wronged.
"Don’t argue with her." Lin Wan Yi shook her head, pulling Gu Lan aside, and quickly whispered something only the two of them could hear.
The anger on Gu Lan’s face slowly turned to surprise, eventually becoming a look of sudden realization.
She nodded heavily, looked at Lin Wan Yi with a gaze full of trust.
Then, she turned silently, squeezed through the crowd, and quickly ran towards the other end of the compound.
This scene left everyone stunned.
The smugness on Aunt Wang’s face froze. Lin Wan Yi’s unexpected actions made her uneasy.
She couldn’t guess what Lin Wan Yi intended to do.
While everyone speculated, a voice, full and powerful, burst forth like thunder.
"What are you all gathered here for! Think it’s a vegetable market?"
The crowd parted naturally to make way.
A woman in her fifties, slightly plump and dressed in the blue uniform of a cadre, walked over. Her hair was meticulously groomed, her face expressionless, her gaze sharp as an eagle’s.
It was Director Sun of the Family Committee, famous for her ironclad fairness.
Director Sun scanned the scene, her eyes first landing on the sniffling and tear-streaked Wang Guixiang on the ground, her brows furrowing slightly. She then looked past the crowd, landing on the tall, composed young woman at the door.
She didn’t ask about the reason.
She simply gave an unquestionable command to the person on the ground: "Get up!"
Wang Guixiang’s sobs subsided.
"And you," Director Sun pointed at Aunt Wang and several of the most gossipy onlookers, "Like making a spectacle of things, don’t you?"
The people shrank their necks sheepishly.
Finally, Director Sun looked at Lin Wan Yi.
"From Mr. Gu’s family, right?"
Lin Wan Yi nodded, neither humble nor arrogant: "Hello, Director Sun."
"Nothing’s good!" Director Sun’s tone remained firm, "Turning the military compound into such a mess, no one can feel good!"
With a wave of her hand, she made the final decision.
"Let’s end this disgraceful show! You," she pointed at Qin Jian Country’s family, "and you, Lin Wan Yi! All of you, come to the committee office!"
Director Sun turned, addressing all the onlookers, raising her voice, enunciating clearly:
"Today, we’ll hold a public mediation meeting, let everyone come and listen, to judge fairly! I want to see, in our red-flagged military compound, who’s really in the wrong!"
