Chapter 155: A Promise to Help
Chapter 155: A Promise to Help
Lumy stood up abruptly, her face tense. She listened intently for another moment before replying quickly.
"I understand. I’ll head there right away. Keep the area secured and don’t engage if possible."
She ended the call and turned to Andrey, her usual cold demeanor now mixed with clear urgency.
"I’m sorry, but something urgent just came up. There’s been a sudden monster outbreak at Felix’s residence, one of our important informants. I need to go there immediately."
She quickly grabbed her jacket from the coat rack, her movements sharp and efficient.
Andrey stood up as well. "Do you need backup?"
Lumy paused at the door and turned to look at him. She shook her head.
"No need. You must be tired too, we can handle this."
Andrey stood up and replied firmly, "No need to be polite. You just helped me with important information. It would be rude if I didn’t help you in return."
Lumy was silent for a moment, her sharp black eyes studying him. After a few seconds, she let out a small sigh.
"...Fine. If you insist," she said, adjusting her glasses. "But don’t push yourself too hard."
Andrey gave a small nod. "I’ll be fine. Let’s go."
Lumy didn’t argue further. She quickly locked her apartment, and both of them headed down to the parking area. Andrey drove while Lumy sat in the passenger seat, giving him directions to Felix’s house.
They arrived at Felix’s residence just ten minutes later. The scene was already chaotic, multiple emergency vehicles, Hero Association staff, and police had cordoned off the area. Bright lights illuminated the two-story house, and a large, unstable purple gate shimmered ominously inside the living room, visible through the broken windows.
As soon as they stepped out of the van, a staff member rushed over to Lumy.
"Miss Rinne! The situation is bad. The gate opened suddenly inside the house. Monsters poured out in huge numbers. We’ve already lost three security personnel."
Lumy’s face tightened. "What about Felix?"
The staff member hesitated, then said quietly:
"...Felix is still trapped inside the gate. He didn’t make it out before the portal fully manifested. We’ve lost all contact with him."
Lumy’s eyes widened. Her usual cold, composed expression cracked for a moment, showing clear shock and worry.
"Felix... is inside?" she whispered, her voice unusually soft.
Andrey, standing beside her, noticed the change in her demeanor immediately. The way her hands clenched and the visible concern in her eyes made him think:
’She has feelings for this man named Felix...’
Lumy quickly regained her composure, but her voice was still tense. "We need to form a rescue team immediately. I’m going in."
A senior officer stepped forward, looking uneasy. "Miss Rinne, that’s too dangerous. The gate is showing signs of high rank — possibly B-rank or higher. We should wait for the main hero reinforcement team to arrive."
Lumy’s fists tightened. For a brief moment, she looked almost desperate.
Andrey noticed it immediately. He stepped forward and spoke calmly but firmly.
"I’m a B-rank hero. I can go in right now and try to rescue Felix."
The surrounding officers and staff immediately reacted.
"That’s too dangerous!" one of them said urgently. "The gate is showing unstable readings. You shouldn’t go in recklessly!"
Another officer added, "Please wait for the main reinforcement team. Rushing in now is too hazardous!"
Lumy turned to Andrey, her sharp eyes filled with a mix of desperation and hope.
"...You’ll really help?" she asked, her voice quieter than usual. "If it’s with a B-rank hero... it should be safer, right? I’ll go in with you."
The officers exchanged worried glances. One of them tried again, "Miss Rinne, even with a B-rank, this is still—"
Andrey raised his hand slightly, cutting them off. His voice was steady and confident.
"We won’t take unnecessary risks. But if we wait too long, Felix might not make it. We’re going in now. Lumy and I will handle this."
The officers hesitated, clearly conflicted. But seeing Lumy’s determined expression and Andrey’s calm confidence, they finally relented.
"...Fine. But please be extremely careful. If the situation becomes too dangerous, retreat immediately."
Lumy gave a small nod. "Understood."
She looked at Andrey, her gaze softening just a fraction.
"Thank you," she said quietly.
Andrey simply nodded. "Let’s go."
The two of them walked side by side toward the unstable purple gate shimmering inside Felix’s house. The officers watched anxiously as Andrey and Lumy stepped into the glowing portal together.
The light swallowed them both.
The moment they stepped inside the gate, the atmosphere changed completely.
The air felt heavy and oppressive, as if an invisible weight was pressing down on their chests. The surroundings were dark, with twisted black trees and glowing purple veins crawling across the ground. A faint, unsettling hum echoed in the distance.
Lumy looked around, her expression tense. She unconsciously placed a hand on her chest.
"...This place is very oppressive," she muttered. "The air feels thick... it’s hard to breathe."
Andrey nodded, staying alert. "Don’t go too far. We need to find Felix quickly. Stay close to me."
They moved carefully through the dark forest-like area. After walking for a few minutes, they heard a strange chittering sound ahead.
From behind a cluster of twisted trees, a large monster emerged.
It had a sleek, black, shiny exoskeleton resembling a giant beetle. Its body was covered in glossy black armor with faint purple lines running across it. Multiple sharp legs clicked against the ground, and its mandibles opened and closed threateningly, dripping with corrosive liquid.
Andrey’s eyes narrowed immediately.
"Careful, Lumy," he said in a low voice. "That thing looks dangerous."
Lumy didn’t hesitate. She smoothly drew her pistol from her waist holster, aimed it at the beetle-like monster, and readied herself. Her stance was professional and steady.
Andrey also prepared himself, Ki energy flowing around his body as he summoned a Ki Blade in his right hand.
The monster let out a high-pitched screech and charged toward them, its sharp legs moving frighteningly fast.
Andrey stepped slightly forward, shielding Lumy.
"Stay behind me. Let’s take it down quickly."
Lumy aimed carefully, her finger resting on the trigger.
"Understood."
The beetle monster rushed at them with terrifying speed, its mandibles wide open.
