Chapter 206: Am I Making You Nervous?
Chapter 206: Am I Making You Nervous?
"Ezra...what are you doing here?" Kaelis’s arms instinctively tightened around Ezra the moment he realized who it was.
Ezra looks up at him, stunned, his eyes wide enough that it makes Kaelis stare back for a second longer than he should have.
It had been the first time he’s seen Ezra’s eyes up close, besides, well, their little intimate moment that he tries very hard not to think about in the forest.
But now that he was looking directly at him like this, Kaelis noticed things he hadn’t before.
The gold in Ezra’s eyes wasn’t sharp like Helios’.
It was softer. Warmer.
And close up, Ezra looked almost unfairly beautiful.
He was familiar with Ezra.
But it felt like he had been familiar with Ezra, if that even made sense.
It didn’t make sense to Kaelis fully, but it just felt like this had happened more than once.
Like it should still surprise Kaelis to see Ezra in such a close space between them.
But somehow it didn’t.
Like his body already knew Ezra before his mind could catch up.
Ezra blinks up at him, and for some reason, maybe because he was stunned, or well, maybe Kaelis was hallucinating—
He was getting a hint of cinnamon.
It was Ezra’s pheromones.
Faint. Very faint.
But there.
’I feel like I’m going insane.’ Kaelis thought, referring to all his odd and strange thoughts lately, all the strange feelings Ezra somehow kept pulling out of him without even trying.
He wished Ezra would break the silence and just speak, and fortunately, Ezra did.
After blinking a few times, Ezra seemed to flinch slightly, as if he suddenly realized how close they were. As he looked away, he answered,
"I–Uhm....my apologies for sneaking up on you like that, Prince Kaelis, I..." Ezra stammered, surprisingly, and almost...adorable. "Love, the maid...came with food, and ended up mentioning that you were...well, called into a meeting in the throne room."
"Oh, right, yes. It was time to announce the investigation." Kaelis answered, though part of him was still distracted by how awkward Ezra was acting.
’He’s usually so confident.’ Kaelis mused inside his mind.
Ezra Belloren was many things, but awkward had never been one of them.
"Oh...that makes sense...yes..." Ezra says, nodding his head a little too quickly.
Kaelis almost smiles at the sight.
"I’m surprised you didn’t bring Lior?" Kaelis asks, glancing behind Ezra and seeing no sign of the child. "Is he okay?"
"Lior is fine now, he’s with Love, u,h, since you said you trusted her...and she happened to mention that her partner was one of the king’s knights, I decided to leave Lior a bit with h,r," Ezra says before pausing briefly. "Was that the right choice?"
"Yes." Kaelis smiles at him assuringly. "Love and her wife, Evangeline, worked for my mother for the longest time, and when she died, they decided to stay for me."
Ezra’s eyes widened almost immediately. "Oh, Evangeline as in...the Evangeline? They’re wives?"
"Yes, they are." Kaelis chuckles softly.
Evangeline was one of the few Alpha women that Kaelis’ mother, Lyra, brought into the king’s palace, because there weren’t any Alpha knights who were women.
All of them swore loyalty to his mother, but then Lyra died, and they had all decided to leave.
Except for one.
Evangeline, who swore to protect Kaelis and proved herself to be strong enough to stay, eventually became the king’s only female knight.
The first and only.
All so she could oversee Kaelis’ growth, as gratitude toward Lyra.
Kaelis trusted her with his life.
She and Love, who treated his mother with respect and care.
Like they were sisters.
For a moment, Kaelis could almost remember it clearly.
His mother laughed softly while Love braided her hair.
Evangeline was standing nearby with crossed arms, pretending she wasn’t listening to their conversation.
The memory makes his chest ache faintly.
"Oh, that’s...nice," Ezra says quietly, but for some reason, he becomes even more awkward after hearing it.
Kaelis noticed it immediately.
Ezra’s shoulders seemed slightly tense now, and he still wasn’t looking directly at him for too long.
’Why is he acting like this?’ Kaelis thought, watching him carefully.
And strangely enough—
Kaelis didn’t dislike it at all.
"Are you feeling okay, Ezra? You seem tense." Kaelis asks directly, genuinely curious now as to what exactly was going on with Ezra.
Because this wasn’t normal.
Ezra Belloren rarely looked nervous around people, especially not around Kaelis. If anything, Ezra was usually composed enough to make other people nervous instead.
"Oh, am I...tense? I–" Ezra looked down for a moment, almost as if he was only realizing it now, then suddenly his face started turning red. "Uh, Your Highness."
"Yes?" Kaelis asks, raising an eyebrow slightly.
"You’re still holding onto me." Ezra points out quietly, though the embarrassment in his voice is painfully obvious now.
Kaelis’ eyes widened immediately.
’Damn it.’
Personally, Kaelis didn’t want to think about it.
Because personally, Kaelis was hoping that Ezra wouldn’t notice.
Or maybe... he had noticed and simply didn’t say anything until now.
Kaelis suddenly becomes painfully aware of the fact that his arm was still wrapped around Ezra’s waist, his hand resting there far too naturally for something that should’ve felt strange.
But it didn’t feel strange.
That was the problem.
Kaelis felt comfortable with Ezra inside his arms.
Too comfortable.
Like Ezra belonged there.
The thought alone almost makes him frown.
"Oh, right..." Kaelis feigns ignorance as naturally as he could, even if internally he was cursing himself, and slowly lets go of Ezra’s waist.
The warmth disappears immediately.
And annoyingly enough, Kaelis notices it.
Ezra takes a small step back almost the second he’s free, his ears still slightly red as he avoids Kaelis’ eyes again.
"Thank you," Ezra says, turning away a little too quickly.
Kaelis watches him carefully for a second.
’He really is flustered.’
And somehow, that realization was entertaining.
"Can you answer my question now?" Kaelis asks, folding his arms loosely as he tilted his head slightly. "Why are you acting so awkward?"
Ezra visibly stiffens.
"I’m not acting awkward."
"You are," Kaelis answers immediately.
"I’m not."
"You’re lying?"
Ezra’s face somehow grows even redder.
"I am not."
Kaelis almost laughs at how defensive he sounded.
’Oh, this is interesting.’
"You’re stammering," Kaelis points out calmly. "And you won’t look at me properly."
"That’s because you keep staring at me." Ezra shoots back quickly before immediately looking like he regretted saying it.
Silence lingers for a second.
Then Kaelis grins slowly.
"Am I making you nervous, Ezra?"
